About 35 Turkish football fans have gone on trial for attempting to stage a coup during mass protests last year in a case that some have revealed that it is an abuse of the justice system by a government bent on revenge.

Surprisingly enough, prosecutors are seeking life sentences for supporters of the Istanbul team known as Besiktas. The accused protesters were claimed to be helping disrupt peace and instigating the unrest that occurred in Istanbul’s Taksim Square in May 2013.
The protesters were said to get started peacefully against the demolition of Gezi Park but soon it spread nationwide.
The national government of Turkey has insisted that it will rout all those involved in the unrest.
